Maya Alvarez started Pavlov's Pooch in the Philadelphia area after a decade of shelter intakes, foster consults, and living-room lessons that ran long because the advice on the internet did not match the house. She kept meeting kind people who had been told to be the boss, to ignore the puppy, or to wait it out. The dogs were still jumping. The people were still tired. The name is a nod to Ivan Pavlov. Association, timing, and consistency change behavior. That is not a slogan. It is the daily work. We chose “and Beyond” because a trained dog is only part of the goal. A calmer household, a safer walk, and a relationship you enjoy on ordinary days matter just as much. Today the team works throughout Greater Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs. What we protect in every lesson
Science over slogans
We use learning theory you can explain to a neighbor. Reinforcement, clear criteria, and management come first. We do not sell dominance as a personality.
Force-free first
Positive reinforcement is the default. LIMA guides the rare moment when we need more structure. Pain is never a training plan.
Honesty about timelines
Puppies take weeks. Reactivity takes months. We will not promise a cured dog in seven days. We will tell you what the next two weeks should look like.
The household is the client
A skill that only works for the trainer is a party trick. We coach the people who live with the dog, including kids old enough to help.
Local, mobile, practical
Rowhouses, twins, apartments, and acreage all change the plan. We train in your area, on your sidewalk, with your doorbell.
Welfare before sport
Service work, protection, and competition are for qualified dogs and committed handlers. We decline work that would put a dog or the public at risk.

Maya Alvarez, CPDT-KA
Founder and head trainer. Maya leads evaluations, behavior cases, and service-dog assessments. She earned her CPDT-KA after years in Philadelphia shelters and private practice, and she still takes first visits herself when a case needs a careful read.
James Whitaker
Board and train, obedience. James runs immersive stays and everyday manners programs. He is the person who will film your dog’s place stay at 7 a.m. and then sit at your dining table to make sure you can run the same cue.
Elena Brooks
Puppy, reactivity, rescue rehab. Elena specializes in young dogs, fearful rescues, and leash reactivity. She is patient without being vague. Families in Bucks and Montgomery Counties often ask for her by name after the first walk.

Credentials you can check
Maya Alvarez holds the CPDT-KA credential from the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. The whole team completes regular education in learning theory, canine body language, and LIMA decision making. We maintain professional liability coverage and a written code of ethics. We are trainers, not veterinarians. We will not diagnose medical conditions. If pain, GI trouble, or sudden behavior change is in the picture, we will ask you to call your vet before we build a training plan.
