Who it is for
Agility is for athletic dogs and handlers who want a sport, not a shortcut for unmet exercise. Border Collies in Chester County, backyard terriers in South Philly, and mixed breeds from Bucks rescues all show up. The common need is a body that can jump and turn, a handler who likes to learn, and a dog who can still hear you when the environment gets fun. Puppies get age-appropriate foundation, not full-height jumping. Seniors get an honest no if joints say so. We will ask about your veterinarian’s clearance before we add impact. Pavlov's Pooch is not a weekend warrior factory.
What happens
Foundations come first: start-line stays, collection and extension in movement, rear-end awareness, and a release word that means something. We teach contacts and simple sequences on low equipment. You will learn to be still when stillness helps and to move when movement is the cue. That is harder than it looks, and it is why private or semi-private intro sessions beat a chaotic drop-in. If you want trial-oriented work later, we will talk courses, rules, and whether your dog’s temperament enjoys the noise of a show site. Many families never trial. They want a rainy-day brain job and a Saturday morning that is not another loop around the same block. That is a complete goal.
Timeline
Body awareness shows up in a handful of lessons. Clean sequences take months. If you are comparing agility to a board and train for manners, they are different products. Manners still matter. A dog who cannot settle in the crate between turns is not ready for a full course plan. Call (267) 357-8109. We will tell you whether sport, obedience, or both belong on the calendar in your area.
What we need before equipment gets exciting
We want a dog who can wait, a handler who can be still, and a body that has been cleared for impact. We will ask about growth plates in young dogs and about old injuries in adults. Foundations on the flat are not a delay tactic. They are how you avoid a sloppy jump that feels fun in week two and expensive in month six. If you are unsure whether you want agility, tricks, or more walks, the free evaluation will sort it. Call (267) 357-8109. Sport near you should add joy to the week, not another argument at the start line.
