Who it is for

Who it is for

This program is for handlers with a qualifying disability who need a dog trained to perform specific tasks, plus public access manners that can hold in Greater Philadelphia stores, transit, and medical buildings. It is not for people who want a vest so a pet can fly in a cabin. It is not an ESA product. Maya Alvarez handles assessments because the ethical bar is high. The dog must be a candidate. Sound nerves, recoverable startle, social neutrality, and a body that can do the job matter more than a trendy breed. We will decline a dog who is fearful, reactive, or painfully over-aroused in public, even if the handler’s need is real. That is protection for you and for the public.

What happens

The free evaluation covers the handler’s goals, the dog’s history, and a first look at public neutrality on a quiet outing in your area. We do not ask you to perform your medical story for sport. We do need enough information to choose tasks that are legal, useful, and teachable. Task work might include retrieval, bracing only when a vet has cleared the dog’s structure, medical alert foundations if the pair is a candidate, or mobility support that does not injure the animal. Training then layers task fluency at home, then in gradually busier public spaces. We teach settle under a table, ignore food on a city sidewalk, and bathroom routines that work on a real day. You are trained as the handler the entire time. A service dog who only works for the trainer is not a service dog. We do not sell certification papers as a product. Public access rights in the United States come from the work the dog does, not from an online badge. We will talk through etiquette, access questions, and when to pause an outing. We are trainers, not attorneys and not physicians.

Timeline

Serious public access work is measured in many months, often more than a year for a young dog. Anyone promising a finished service dog in a few weeks is selling something else. After assessment we quote a plan, or we tell you to stop. Call (267) 357-8109 if you want that honest conversation near you.

What we need from you as a handler

Service work is a daily job. You will train in short sessions, keep records, and protect the dog from being petted into exhaustion at a Reading Terminal line. You will learn when to leave a store. You will learn how to answer access questions without a fight. If that sounds like more than you can carry this year, we will help you look at other support options, including a well-trained pet and a conversation with your care team. Quoted after assessment means we will not email you a package price before we have seen the pair. Call (267) 357-8109 and ask for a service-dog evaluation in your area.
